'Use & Mention'
The appearance of collage in early twentieth-century art marked an immense
alteration in visual experience. In collage, space and time could be
sliced and spliced in ways previously unavailable to photography or
painting; collage could be additive (placement,
juxta-position,com-position) or subtractive (cut, removal).
Although mainstream visual technologies have today normalized methods that
originated in collage, and although the becoming-orthodox of appropriation
and post-production have homogenised the terrain it traverses, collage
nonetheless still empowers tactics that play at de-skilling while invoking
intimacy, interrupted passivity and subtractive force. A reliance on
dramatic juxtaposition was characteristic of classic modernist collage, as
in Hannah Höch’s virtuoso works of the 1920s and 30s. Whatever their
variety, contemporary applications of collage frequently forego
the method of declarative juxtaposition, often favouring instead an
intricate and implosive thinking. Catherine Malabou's writings propose a
concept of plasticity that is intimately linked to explosiveness and
emphatically separated from elasticity: an elastic form can return to its
earlier state after suffering deformations, whereas a plastic form cannot;
instead it retains the signs of alteration when stretched, gouged,
scarred, re-moulded or cut. Collage in this exhibition is understood as a
transferable and mutable apparatus of subtractive plasticity.
'Use & Mention' offers a broad selection of current collage-related
activity. It includes works on paper, text, sound and video works.

i was the 'visiting artist' at the university of the arts, philadelphia, from sept to nov 2009, and did this porcelain sculpture using the glazes developed by uarts own ceramics dept. a collaboration between the sculpture and ceramics depts!

O artista faz mostra relâmpago na Amarelonegro Arte Contemporânea.

Victor Arruda rides again, tomando carona nos escândalos de Brasília e na coincidência dos sobrenomes, abre no dia 17 às 19h, na Amarelonegro Arte Contemporânea.

A mostra relâmpago " A RESPEITO DA CORRUPÇÃO - Pinturas de Victor Arruda", expõe 20 telas de sua produção recente, algumas remetendo a trabalhos da década de 70, outras com frases e palavras que expressam a irritação e o saco cheio de todos nós: "Unam-se às vítimas"; "Crianças bem comportadas não cospem em políticos corruptos"; " Políticos corruptos cospem na cara das criancinhas ".

Provocador desde sempre, Victor Arruda transita por vários caminhos da arte: criou a cenografia de um balé de Deborah Colker; é autor de um painel de 20 metros para o Memorial da América Latina, de São Paulo, que pintou a convite de Niemeyer e fez várias individuais em galerias e museus brasileiros e europeus, nos últimos anos.

Vale a pena correr porque a exposição só vai durar apenas dois dias: inaugura na quinta-feira, dia 17, às 19h e fica aberta na sexta feira, dia 18, das 11 às 19h e no sábado das 11 às 16h.

A figure enters a space that holds three pedestals. Its species identity is unambiguous: this is a man. He is wearing clothes – black tee-shirt, black pants. But he assumes the aspect of an ape to an uncanny degree: in his facial mannerisms, with an overshot jaw and peering eyes; the sounds he makes, grunts to roars; his gait, adjusted to the long-armed proportions of an ape by short crutches. The duality of animal and human is unsettling, and that is just the start. He ponders the ceiling. He runs in circles. He explores the pedestals then attacks them, scattering them violently. He runs at the camera. He howls. For 40 minutes, the viewer alternates from being inside to outside, from seeing the man-ape for its otherness to identifying with it. For her second solo exhibition in London, Erika Verzutti has created
several sculptures and a painting that combine more traditional art
materials like clay with paint brushes, rulers and pencils. The works
sit between figuration and abstraction with a playful, casual and
unfinished aesthetic. The juxtaposition of dissimilar styles with
accidental gestures combine to create works that are a humorous and
invigorating contribution to contemporary sculptural practice.

Erika Verzutti was born in Sao Paolo, Brazil
(1971) where she currently lives and works. Following studies at
Goldsmiths she had a solo exhibition with Blow de la Barra Gallery,
London, as well as partaking in numerous international solo and group
shows.

Tiago Carneiro da Cunha

A Galeria Fortes Vilaça tem o prazer de apresentar a nova exposição de Tiago Carneiro da Cunha. O artista apresenta uma série de esculturas inéditas feitas em faiança policromada, técnica com a qual vem trabalhando desde 2007.

Nesta nova série o artista explora uma linguagem gestual que, apesar de continuar pesquisas formais e conceituais já características de seu trabalho, é quase uma perversão satírica da geometria polida da sua série anterior em resina. Aqui os seus desorientados personagens – poetas, pedintes, bandidos, filósofos, tiranos e outros estereótipos sarcasticamente sorridentes - emergem de (ou submergem em) um pântano multicolorido composto, assim como eles próprios, pelo movimento dos dedos do artista sobre a massa, em gestos ao mesmo tempo cuidadosos e expressivos.

As peças foram modeladas em faiança (uma cerâmica fina de baixa temperatura) e pintadas em “baixo vidrado”. Ambas são técnicas tradicionais que, além de permitirem poucos erros, também obrigam o artista a lidar com incertezas e surpresas no processo. As cores, por exemplo, são completamente diferentes ao serem pintadas do que após a queima final, e, uma vez jogada a tinta, não há como apagá-la. Esta imprevisibilidade é aproveitada pelo artista, que não define totalmente os campos de cores, mas os incorpora de maneira fluida ao movimento da matéria, numa mistura de controle e acaso.

As esculturas, de tamanhos variados, estão dispostas em uma grande bancada no centro do espaço expositivo, numa atmosfera que referencia tanto ao museu como a uma loja de cerâmicas, adicionando outra camada de humor critico à exposição. Temas como violência, poder, sexo e identidade nacional perpassam várias peças e formam uma espécie de “sátira da sátira social”, referenciando e explorando os limites - com “toques metalingüísticos” – de uma tradição que inclui satiristas e ceramistas como o português Bordallo Pinheiro (1846 – 1905) e o francês Honoré Daumier (1808 – 1879). Como observa Gilberto Mariotti, que assina um ensaio feito especialmente para a exposição, Carneiro da Cunha “vê a própria crítica social como uma dentre outras matérias que convivem nas peças. Este só pode olhar para o mundo desde dentro, com a cumplicidade que um certo cinismo, do tipo sincero e até meio ingênuo, pode oferecer.”

No começo de 2009, Tiago Carneiro da Cunha expôs, junto com Erika Verzutti, na Galeria Misako and Rosen, Tóquio; em 2008, teve uma mostra individual na Galeria VPF em Lisboa. Participa regularmente de exposições coletivas em museus e instituições nacionais e internacionais. De setembro a novembro deste ano, será artista residente e professor convidado na University of the Arts da Filadélfia, EUA.

Galeria Fortes Vilaça is pleased to present a new exhibition by Tiago Carneiro da Cunha. The artist presents a series of sculptures made in polychrome faience, a technique he has been working with since 2007.In this new series the artist explores a gestural language which, even while it continues to develop formal and conceptual concerns already characteristic of his work, is almost a satirical perversion of the polished geometry of his previous work in resin. Here his disoriented characters – poets, beggars, bandits, philosophers, tyrants and other sarcastically smiling stereotypes – emerge from (or sink into) a multicolored swamp composed, as they themselves are, by the movement of the artist’s fingers on the clay, in gestures which are simultaneously careful and expressive.

The pieces were modeled in faience (a fine, low-temperature ceramic) and painted with underglazing, two traditional techniques which, besides allowing little room for mistakes, force the artist to cope with uncertainties and surprises during the production process. The colors, for example, are completely different when painted than after the final firing, and once applied there is no way to erase them. This unpredictability is appropriated by the artist, who does not completely define the color fields but rather incorporates them fluidly within the material’s movement, in a blend of control and chance.

The various-sized sculptures are arranged on a single large plinth in the center of the exhibition room, in an atmosphere that references both the museum and the ceramics shop, adding another layer of critical humor to the show. Themes such as violence, power, sex and national identity pervade several pieces, creating a sort of satire of social satire that joins - and with metalinguistic touches explores the limits of - a tradition that includes satirists and artists such as Portuguese master ceramist and cartoonist Bordallo Pinheiro (1846–1905) and French printmaker, caricaturist, painter and sculptor Honoré Daumier (1808–1879). As noted by Gilberto Mariotti, who has written an essay especially for this exhibition, Carneiro da Cunha “sees social criticism itself as one of the various materials that coexist in the pieces. This can only look at the world from within, with the complicity provided by a certain cynicism, of a sincere and somewhat ingenuous sort.”

In early 2009, Tiago Carneiro showed his work at Misako and Rosen Gallery, Tokyo, together with Erika Verzutti; in 2008, he had a solo show at Galeria VPF in Lisbon. He participates on a regular basis in group shows at museums and institutions in Brazil and abroad. From September to November this year he will participate as a resident artist and guest tutor at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, USA.

The art market is more moral than the stock market

Our argument was simple and straightforward, even if we utterly failed to make it properly. The art world, we said—like all worlds—has unethical practices.

“Chandelier bidding” happens and is disgusting; art dealers can be sharks; art fairs are like tent-city casinos; the market revved up the bullshit machine. Yet even considering all this, we said the art world is not more corrupt and less ethical than Wall Street. We acknowledged that the system may be damaged, but added that in our studios and in front of works of art when we experience moments of genuine stillness, intensity and meaningfulness, places on the edge of language, the market cannot strip away these things. In this imperfect realm, we sometimes experience the elemental otherness of art. That cannot happen in the stock market, ethics or not.

Mr Hue-Williams talked about how the art world has no regulations and that anyone can get into it. I said that other than basic guidelines already in place (especially in the auction sector), the art world is a “world” and not an industry. I’m lucky that “anyone can be in the art world”. I have no degrees and no qualifications, other than the fact that I want to do it. If there were guidelines about who could be in the art world, most of us wouldn’t be allowed to be here at all. Basically, they were arguing for a form of cultural-ethical cleansing. They claimed that with no regulations the only thing an art dealer needed was “to have two eyes”.

Once our side admitted to “chandelier bidding” and the rest, however, the day was lost. To the audience, the argument turned on the concept, “the art world is unethical”. To us, it turned only on the word “less”. Either way, these are semantic points that we clearly lost. As one blogger later noted: “I found that the ‘against the motion’ side made many errors of strategy and fact.”

Debate strategies and rules aside, I think it’s utterly ridiculous to claim that the art world is “less ethical than the stock market”. The stock market made more people richer, made more people lose money, and brought the US to its knees. By comparison, the art world is relatively benign, and the unethical parts are relatively limited. No one in the art world jumped out of a window because a painting’s price decreased. No one was put out of their home because of the art market. Even at its height, 1% of 1% of 1% of all artists made money. You can rail against the business practices of the art world, but even in flush times reputations are built on credibility, not on money or the market. The public is suspicious of the art world because the art market, and not art, is what they saw first when they saw art. Regardless, just because a dealer makes a lot of money doesn’t mean that they have the respect of the art world. Money doesn’t earn respect. Respect exists outside of the market. If you are in art for the money, you’re not really in art at all. As Brice Marden said: “It’s not the art that’s suffering; it’s the market that’s suffering. They don’t have anything to do with each other.”

An audience member identified himself as a lawyer and said he agreed with the other side because we can never be certain about the true value of art. I agree—the art world, especially now, is not about “certainty”. The art world is a space where uncertainty, doubt and paradox exist, and can transform the world. Art is not a decorative ornament on the edifice of philosophy, religion or economics. Art is not optional. Art is a universal force that helps make things happen, even if some of those things are tainted. The debate made me understand several things: cynicism about the art world runs deep; I have no clue how to debate; the art world exists in a realm that can be described by, but is nevertheless beyond, words. The following day, an old Beatles lyric drifted through my mind: “Although they thought I knew the answer; I knew but I could not say.”

MISAKO & ROSEN is pleased to announce our next exhibition, a
two-person show featuring new sculptures by two Brazilian artists,
Tiago Carneiro da Cunha and Erika Verzutti. Verzutti's work was
recently on view in Tokyo as part of the group exhibition, "Neo
Tropicalia When Lives Become Form", presented by the Museum of
Contemporary Art as well as the exhibition "Haptic" curated by Vik
Muniz for Tokyo Wonder Site Hongo; this is Tiago's debut Tokyo
exhibition.

The exhibition, a continuation of a series of two-person shows
presented by the gallery, contrasts the sleek, very well produced work
of Tiago with the trashy, incomplete-looking work of Verzutti. Both
artists work in popular art-language - sculpture and both produce works
that represent things from the real world - usually animals (including
people) or plants but each takes a different approach to producing
works. Tiago's sculptures are made from a contemporary material - resin
(though, more recently also ceramic) and have a very high quality
production look. Erika's work, on the other hand, is the result of her
playful use of basic art materials such as clay, paint and the actual
materials she uses to make art works (such as paint brushes, rulers and
pencils). Erika's works look unfinished but also obviously look like
something from the real world - an animal or a plant. Tiago's
sculptures are very artificial looking but also represent living things
from the real world.

Both artists use a common medium that general people can understand
- sculpture - and make works that almost look like craft instead of
art; but their goal is to confuse the idea of craft and art, hi and low
art and to introduce popular ideas into contemporary art. This is also
the goal of MISAKO & ROSEN so we hope that you have a chance to
enjoy this unusual chance to see the work of two young Brazilian
artists in a Tokyo gallery exhibition.

GM: Você estava me contando sobre o tema da exposição, “sobre amor”.
É como uma sobrevida?

EV: Sobre o “sobre”: em 1999 a tese do Tiago (Carneiro da Cunha), “For Real”, foi uma revelação definitiva. Ele defendia que não dá para conviver com “tema” como força condutora do trabalho, e que a arte caminha através da linguagem e da graciosidade. Para mim foi um entendimento bombástico de tão óbvio. Desde então os assuntos ou figuras que aparecem no trabalho são um presente a mais, como letra de música. O Tiago hoje em dia faz um trabalho cheio de temas super carregados, morte, sexo, violência. Acho que ele só conseguiu encontrar um jeito de lidar com esses assuntos no trabalho por ter percorrido o caminho contrário. No meu caso, estou fazendo um cemitério de animais, um parque temático. E acho que isso só foi possível por causa da religião libertadora de que tema não enche a barriga do artista. Então é sobre amor, sim. Não depois do amor, antes. Talvez amor pelos animais como representação do amor humano, para ajudar a entender o humano.

GM: “Desde então os assuntos ou figuras que aparecem no trabalho são um presente a mais, como letra de música”. Essa frase da sua resposta confirma a percepção que eu tenho tido do seu trabalho. Assuntos ou figuras que “aparecem” não são o assunto, mas sim a forma que estas figuras passam a assumir junto às outras. O “aparecem” condiz com minha idéia de que você escolhe estas figuras respeitando um fluxo corrente de imagens sem quebrá-lo. Estes assuntos ou figuras são um presente como letra de música, como algo adicional à música em si, como quando passamos a entender a letra depois de ouvir a música no rádio um par de vezes sem prestar muita atenção. O que me leva de novo ao seu gosto por uma escrita falada, como a do (João Carlos) Marinho. Parece que você espera pela palavra recortada e brilhante que “aparece” na conversação geral, no blábláblá do motorista de táxi (olha aí de novo) e a incorpora. Aliás, os trabalhos funcionam um tanto como uma armadilha para estas imagens, para estes animais… Puxa, falei demais e nem toquei no assunto “amor”.

EV: E às vezes é a letra que pesca a gente. Pensei em “Tarado” do Caetano (Veloso) com o Jorge Mautner, a letra é comoção imediata, depois a gente percebe guitarrinhas de luau embalantes, a gente quase junta tudo na música, mas não junta, sempre tem uma coisinha para descobrir. Eu seria muito feliz se conseguisse sempre trabalhar assim, material, figura, letra e música (uma mexendo nos contornos da outra para sempre). Gostei muito que você falou em “respeitar o fluxo de imagens”. Em momentos raros desse troca-troca da forma com o assunto, é possível se sentir trabalhando numa onda caudalosa. O Waly Salomão falou que “o destino dos bons rios é transbordar”. Minhas formas de partida - vasos, abacaxis, bichos de orelhas espigadas - deliram com a possibilidade da escultura crescer, abrir, florescer, se espalhar com vida própria e me atropelar. Mas não transbordo. O artista precisa voltar inteiro dessas corredeiras de imagens, para contar a história.
Sua comparação dessas buscas com meu amor pela “palavra falada recortada e brilhante” é um prato cheio para conversar. Gosto muito de ditongos crescentes, abertos como os vasos. O Marinho encontrou uma graciosidade tremenda escrevendo falas de crianças. Com o vocabulário reduzido da infância ele consegue montar estruturas precisas lindas, com o tal brilho que só um adulto vê. Comecei a ler Marinho aos 30 e virou uma companhia para minha procura do gesto bom e fácil, da fertilidade do aprendiz, do be-a-bá iluminado. E as escolhas dos assuntos das frases do Marinho, dançam valsa com as escolhas das palavras, ele repara em coisinhas corriqueiras, proustianas, invisíveis se não anotadas.

GM: Outra associação que você faz e que me aparece como um valor no trabalho: a fertilidade e o brilho de quem aprendem. Em vários momentos é possível observar boas relações entre uns materiais que podem remeter ao universo escolar ou de uma prática artística iniciante, estes artigos de papelaria que ocupavam um lugar simbólico incontestável em algumas de nossas infâncias, e umas formas que ironicamente, eu acho, resvalam em questões pretensamente sérias. Digo ironicamente, não por achar que a ironia funcione no seu trabalho como objetivo ou estratégia principal (como é o caso do trabalho de tantos outros artistas que acompanho) mas porque é irônico como estes dois mundos reagem entre si quando do resultado final. Há uma troca interessante entre estas duas instâncias. É difícil causar esta faísca sem cair em ironia pré-fabricada. Ocupar o lugar de um agente inábil, ou ingênuo, talvez, mas no sentido de quem se coloca antes da descoberta, daquele que valoriza a experiência prática como algo disparador ou inaugural parece ser uma estratégia recorrente pra você.

EV: Já não sei se entendo o que é ironia, se ando protestando à toa contra ela. Tendo a associar ironia a deboche, paródia ou hipérbato, que não me agradam. Talvez eu não goste da ironia como gesto, me parece um trejeito facilitado. Fui tentar entender rápido o que é ironia, lendo um trecho qualquer do Memórias Póstumas (de Brás Cubas, Machado de Assis). Deu-me a impressão de que ironia ali é uma música de fundo, engraçadíssima, flutuando pelos rumos da história, levando o leitor a desconfiar de tudo. Se ironia é humor, respeito muito, humor é um sistema riquíssimo para filosofar. Se ironia é um gatilho para causar desconfiança, melhor ainda, então aceito que trabalho com ironia.
“Ocupar o lugar de um agente inábil” vai de encontro a esta desconfiança: desconfiar da idéia que já nasce artística, aprovada. Cresci sob o teto da arte conceitual que incentiva(va) os artistas a fazer coisas assertivas. Outro dia brinquei que a Arte Conceitual é como o Antigo Testamento, ou a “Era da Lei”, um período inventado por Deus para ensinar aos homens como viver. Mas agora que estamos vivendo a “Era da Graça”, tendo aprendido a lição temos que administrar a liberdade total. “Ironicamente”, a liberdade é grande demais, opressora e paralisante. Vivendo feliz sob a constante de que o trabalho já nasce informado de que é um trabalho de arte, inventei para mim a função de desinformá-lo, ou me analfabetizar em gugu-dadás, como quem quer que trabalho-filho tenha uma boa infância, cresça forte e saudável. Colocando-me na posição de aprendiz encontro uma posição política do que acredito que é um bom jeito de trabalhar. Mas a política veio através da prática, da busca ilusória pela fertilidade no trabalho. A virgindade dos materiais da prateleira da papelaria, dos lápis com cores que logo serão desordenadas, o viço dos papéis e pincéis novinhos, exalam fertilidade. E o senso comum no entendimento desses materiais como “materiais de arte” é uma avenida larga e arborizada na minha relação com quem vai ver o trabalho.

GM: Se até ironia pode virar trejeito, como evitar que o trabalho passe a funcionar como forma autômata, como estilo? Quando estávamos pensando o projeto para o CCSP, comecei a rascunhar um “trabalho da Erika” na sua frente, como uma estratégia para disparar o processo de criação, e sua reação foi a de se apropriar do que achava interessante ali e levá-lo adiante. Fui capaz de imaginá-lo por conhecer seus procedimentos? Por ter identificado um estilo? Talvez aquele não fosse realmente um trabalho da Erika antes do caminho que você deu a ele… Será que você se apropriou dele, como costuma fazer com toda conversa, e como se apropriou também de nossa conversa?

EV: Não sei se entendi bem o que deveria ser evitado. “forma autômata” é uma forma fora de controle? Frankenstein? Se falarmos sobre a perda de controle sobre percepções e associações que o trabalho poderá ativar etc, estarei na ola do consenso vinde a mim. Ao mesmo tempo, cultivo métodos ilusórios de controle. A recorrência das formas espetadas, abacaxis, são uma anotação sobre minha vontade de que o trabalho cresça emancipado. Vontade de dar pistas de que o trabalho sabe que está aberto, sabe que sobre ele pousarão outros olhos, sabe que vai morar na casa de alguém, perto de um sofá, quem sabe numa reserva técnica enregelada. Esse e outros procedimentos são tentativas de controle ou de fazer um objeto consciente de suas possíveis aventuras. Acho que não era bem disso que você estava falando, mas está relacionado ao projeto para o CCSP, onde estamos tentando brincar com uma “consciência do cubo expositivo / base”, do mesmo jeito que no cemitério várias esculturas interagem com as bases, como é fácil de ver no Burro. No projeto para o CCSP, cuja proposta é interagir com a instituição, foi rápido escolher o café de garrafa térmica como tema, vindo da crença de que a neutralidade, não sei se é neutralidade a palavra, mas a pureza… já sei: a relevância da instituição cultural no funcionamento da arte é ilusória, e que o café é o que há de comum entre instituição, galeria, residência, banco, boteco… Acho que de uma forma ou de outra, defendo que a realidade está mais próxima do que é banal, mas isso é muito assunto.
Sobre o estilo: antes de receber esta sua pergunta, eu estava te escrevendo um e-mail a parte, chamado “a crise”. Falava sobre não me reconhecer em todos os trabalhos do Pet Cemetery. Ora, se a semente da idéia do Cemitério foi a vontade de poder desfilar estilos impunemente, arriscar, contradizer, enfeitar com a dedicação e liberdade que um parente escolhe cor e forma para um túmulo, por que agora o desconforto? Para esta exposição executei esculturas improváveis, formas que você não rabiscaria como meu trabalho, usando como parâmetros me aproximar de associações e materiais que me parecessem atraentes e me afastar o quanto possível da paródia, que é muito tentadora. Esses novos seres - como o São Francisco geométrico de madeira, ou o Avestruz, um tripé bastante masculino - surgiram de vontades marginais, sem contexto aparente dentro do “meu estilo” que entendo como “meu traço”. Se é uma aventura libertadora, é também uma ambição arriscada, de ser reconhecida pelo irreconhecível, dá uma insegurança inerente. Acho que nascemos sob o céu da arte-marca, da repetição que legitima a pesquisa do artista. Então parece que estou pesquisando um traço que incorpore o conjunto dos meus traços possíveis. E acho que tem bastante gente pesquisando isso. Você que fez rapidamente um rabisco com “meu estilo”, o que acha de tudo isso?
Daí você falou em apropriação e pensei que essa coleção de traços/estilos possíveis contém coisas que eu gostaria de fazer (por causa do material, por exemplo) e provavelmente coisas que vi (ou ouvi, li) e que gostaria de fazer também, como um trabalho de fã. Fãs sempre produzem coisas: colagens, coleções, clubes, camisetas, álbuns. Então acho que parte da motivação de abraçar diversas possibilidades no trabalho vem dessa ansiedade de fã de arte. No Pet Cemetery encontrei um jeito muito prazeroso de lidar com essa fome de apropriação que você apontou, quando foram surgindo as esculturas colaborativas. Eu precisava de uma coisa esguia para espetar o Bull Head - que é um bronze batata-doce com chifres de mandioca, para fazê-lo parecer com uma daquelas caveiras de boi espetadas no sertão. Não conseguia imaginar coisa melhor que uma escultura de lata de concreto do Alexandre (da Cunha), então pedi a ele para fazer uma lata para Bull Head. Depois surgiram trabalhos que precisavam da ajuda do Efrain (Almeida), Tiago, Tonico (Lemos Auad), Leda (Catunda). Dentro da ambição de manter o trabalho aberto, atento, acho que a apropriação surge como um bônus.

GM: Aqui talvez fosse o momento em que discutíssemos mais especificamente os trabalhos desta exposição. Mas acho melhor não mais saber sobre eles por esta conversa. Só começar a vê-los, já que agora estão aí, piscando pra gente. Acima de tudo me fica a vontade de saber mais sobre esta idéia semente em que aquele sujeito ingênuo, de que falamos como possibilidade criativa, deu as caras cuidando da decoração de túmulo de parente. Sempre me interessou como o gosto “doméstico” é transposto para estas situações de pesar coletivo. Como ele funciona como uma cola estética para estas celebrações familiares, tornando familiares os ambientes mais fúnebres. E como esta justaposição de elementos que carregam a beleza mais reconhecível são articulados na apropriação destes ambientes, que afinal são públicos. Quem sabe aí esteja outra dimensão poderosa da nossa esfera pública, com que brinquei no texto para o CCSP…

EV: Sem reler seu texto do CCSP, revivo a sensação de que à primeira vista, nas primeiras linhas, não se parece um texto de artes plásticas (assim como as esculturas as vezes não parecem arte?). “Cafezinho” ficou cheio de sonoridades domésticas e literárias que dão forma à informalidade do texto. As palavras curtas e imagens conhecidas, avizinham texto e trabalho, texto e leitor, trabalho e leitor, para em seguida convidar todos a se distanciar. Esta manobra (in)formal é parecida com o jeito que penso nos trabalhos do CCSP e os outros. O cemitério abusa dessa “cola estética” como ponto de partida, tentando encontrar a “cola estética” mediadora do artista arte-vida, ou no meu caso como disse uma vez a Márcia (Fortes), atelier-vida. Você quer começar a falar dos trabalhos? Eu gostaria muito. Você viu o Burro?

GM: Vi o burro na foto. E por alguma razão tenho uma lembrança mais viva agora do desenho do Burro. Acho incrível que os desenhos dos trabalhos já prevejam algumas características físicas ou concretas dos objetos sem que funcionem apenas como projetos.
Mas do burro, gosto da idéia que cria um lugar de percepção para quem se relaciona com ele que parece mencionar com humor aquelas leituras de obra que nos ensinavam na escola, naquelas aulas em que o dedo do professor anda pelos quadros, montando uma narrativa com resposta certa. O “olhar” perfaz um caminho cujo objetivo já está dado desde o início pelo rabo afixado. O que retira do trabalho a pretensão de uma resposta pronta. Para quem gosta de repisar a idéia de trabalho participativo, deve ser um tanto frustrante…

EV: Falei com o Elton (Verzutti) sobre isso, as esculturas ficaram parecidíssimas com os desenhos. Isso foi uma surpresa, já que me gabo de deixar o trabalho se modificar e se acidentar enquanto faço. Aqui vários acidentes estavam roteirizados, uma contradição lucrativa. Acho que a idéia de fazer uma fartura de esculturas ajudou, e fui produzindo quase tudo que tinha desenhado, pensando no (Alexandre) Herchkovitch que disse que só tem uma regra de trabalho: executar tudo o que desenha.
Gostei muito dessa associação do rabo do burro com um percurso predefinido para olhar. Acho que é isso mesmo, uma manipulação anunciada que se auto destrói. Logo, é um trabalho participativo, repiso. Como não seria?

Die aus Kunstharz gefertigten Skulpturen von Tiago Carniero da Cunha zeigen Totenschädel, Totems, menschliche Figuren oder, wie hier, Sphingen. Sie erinnern an Souvenirs, schwanken in ihrer Ästhetik zwischen wertvollem Kleinod und furchtbarem Kitsch. Die glänzenden und gleichzeitig durchscheinenden, fein geschliffenen Oberflächen verdeutlichen einen groben, geometrisierenden Umgang mit dem Material, was den Arbeiten in ihrer Widersprüchlichkeit einen archaischen Charakter verleiht. Und so ruhen hier jeweils zwei Sphingen übereinander und untergraben durch ihre vermeintlich geschlechtliche Tätigkeit ihre symbolische Funktion als Wächter. Nichts ist so wie es scheint.

Possui várias adaptações espetaculares. Noturna, passa os dias pousado na ponta de um galho ou tronco seco, com suas cores confundindo-se com o poleiro. Corpo todo cinza claro, manchado e listrado de cinza mais escuro, com bolas claras e escuras sobre as asas, levemente amarronzadas. Sua defesa é manter-se imóvel, de modo que a qualquer sinal de perigo aumenta sua semelhança com o tronco de apoio (foto). Controla os arredores através de duas pequenas “janelas” nas pálpebras, sem necessitar abri-las. Ao observar qualquer situação de risco potencial, lentamente estica o pescoço e dirige o bico para cima, encostando mais a cauda no tronco de apoio. Desse modo, torna-se praticamente invisível no ambiente.

Ratapoil

model 1851, cast c. 1891

Viewed from any direction, the swaying, strutting Ratapoil
is Daumier's brilliant stab at the political ambitions of
Louis-Napoleon, who would proclaim himself emperor of France in 1852.
Daumier strongly supported the nascent French democracy and used his
art -- both his drawn caricatures of Ratapoil that appeared in the
satiric journal Charivari and this vigorous sculpture -- to oppose the idea of a return to monarchy. He fashioned Ratapoil (Ratskin) as one of Louis-Napoleon's agents-provocateurs,
a cudgel-carrying bully whose job was to stir up crowds, using bribes
and force when necessary, to convince the people to return
Louis-Napoleon to power.

Daumier
used a rough-modeled realism to detail the character of Ratapoil. With
hat crumpled and smashed down over a bony skull, eye glaring, nose
broken, mustache and beard pointed to a Satanic extreme, and outmoded
frockcoat and trousers streaming over an emaciated torso, Ratapoil
seems a mix of self-confident dandy and has-been thug. Sweeping
diagonals invigorate the figure: Ratapoil's neck and jaw turn hard to
one side, shoulders, chest, and right leg propel him forward as he
arches his back in a dramatic curve, grasping his club behind him.

Though less than 18 inches tall, Ratapoil,
as political symbol, was given monumental status by Daumier's fellow
Republicans. Because of his fear of government reprisals after
Louis-Napoleon's successful coup in 1851, Daumier reportedly hid the
statuette for the rest of his life. The original clay Ratapoil
is lost; the National Gallery's bronze version is one of a series cast
from a plaster model in 1891, thirteen years after the artist's death.

A política de drogas adotada pela ONU desde 1999 considera que usar, produzir e comercializar drogas é crime. A meta adotada pelos países membros previa a erradicação das drogas num período de 10 anos. O prazo, no entanto, está chegando ao fim sem que se tenha qualquer avanço neste sentido.

Verifica-se aumento no consumo de drogas em quase todos os países da América Latina. Os dados indicam que a política de "guerra às drogas", defendida principalmente pelos Estados Unidos, não está dando resultados, e mais: especialistas apontam que ela ainda é responsável pelo surgimento de uma série de novos problemas, como o aumento da violência armada e a explosão da população carcerária. De acordo com o último Relatório Mundial sobre Drogas (pdf em inglês), publicado anualmente pela ONU, 4,8% da população mundial entre 15 e 64 anos usaram drogas em 2007. O estudo também aponta o Brasil como o segundo maior consumidor, atrás apenas dos EUA.

Em 2009, a ONU voltará a discutir o tema e fará uma revisão desta política, abrindo uma brecha para a busca de novos modelos. As políticas de redução de danos, adotadas amplamente na Europa, trazem uma abordagem do tema pela via da saúde pública, e não da segurança. Para alguns ativistas, é a forma ideal de tratar a dependência e o abuso de drogas, separando esta questão do problema causado pelo uso de armas de fogo e pelo domínio de territórios por traficantes. Para outros, as drogas deveriam ser completamente legalizadas. Há ainda os que acreditam que a "guerra às drogas" deve continuar. Norte-americanos e europeus parecem ter claras as suas opções. E os latino- americanos, que modelo devem defender?

Para responder essa pergunta, foi criada a Comissão Latino-Americana Sobre Drogas e Democracia, com a missão de contribuir para a discussão com o olhar latino-americano. É tempo, portanto, de renovar o debate. Com esse objetivo, o Comunidade Segura reúne neste dossiê reportagens e entrevistas exclusivas, além de documentos sobre a problemática das drogas e seus desdobramentos na região.

On 3 July 1998, there was a sense of anticipation in the Cardiff
artscene: a new artist-run space was being launched. The inaugural
exhibition preview was packed with artists, students and suits, curious
about the new project; it was met with both a sense of expectation as
well as the doom-laden predictions of a short lifespan. Fortunately g39
is still here, quietly but determinedly delivering a programme,
providing a meeting place for artists and a focus for graduates.

To celebrate g39 is marking its ten-year anniversary with a
commemorative programme of events, starting with If You Build It, They
Will Come – an attempt to present the works of each and every
artist g39 has worked with in the past decade.

When I returned from Los Angeles not long
ago, where I had gone to see the new Broad Contemporary Art Museum,
friends quite naturally asked for my impressions. The strange thing was
that I hardly knew how to respond. And in recent months I have found
myself often faced with this problem. I have not had much of anything
to say after visiting a number of widely discussed events: the 2008
Whitney Biennial; the opening show at the New Museum of Contemporary
Art (aptly titled "Unmonumental: The Object in the 21st Century"); the
survey of Japanese artist Takashi Murakami at the Brooklyn Museum; the
Olafur Eliasson show at the Museum of Modern Art; the exhibition of
Jeff Koons's sculpture on the roof of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I
have had thoughts, sure; but they are the thoughts of an anthropologist
rather than a museumgoer, of a student of the art world rather than a
person who has had an encounter with a work of art. What there is to
discuss is not visual experiences so much as visual stunts, which are
frequently mind-boggling in their size and complexity. Mostly what I
can offer, after all this museumgoing and gallerygoing, is a series of
postcards about nothing written from places that felt like nowhere.

I gather I am not alone. Reporting on the opening of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum in Art in America,
Michael Duncan described "a bewildering event, provoking soul-searching
in the local art community and the museum world at large." And in the
lead article in Artforum's April issue, devoted to "Art and Its
Markets," the art historian Thomas Crow complained of trustees reneging
on public trusts, of "barbarism" in cultural institutions, of "vandals
... inside the walls." Well, yes. Then again, I find it interesting
that many commentators are far more eager to criticize the collectors
and the dealers than the art stars who produce this junk in the first
place. Can it be that even the most vapid machine-tooled work is still
covered by the old romantic alibi, namely that the muses made me do it?
The woes of the art world cannot be blamed entirely on the rapacity of
a cadre of collectors, dealers, and curators. After all, it was an
artist, Damien Hirst, who dreamed up the platinum replica of a human
skull, paved with diamonds, that was first exhibited last year in
London in a show called "Beyond Belief.

directly at auction, sparking fears that the salerooms will take

studio at Sotheby's. Leading the sale will be a 2m x 3m bull in
formaldehyde called The Golden Calf, with hooves and horns cast in
solid 18-carat gold, and a golden halo crowning its head. The sculpture
is estimated to fetch up to £12 million, which would be an auction
record for the artist.

Foi lançado ontem em São Paulo, na Livraria Cultura, o livro Religiões ayahuasqueiras: um balanço bibliográfico,
de Beatriz Caiuby Labate, Isabel Santana de Rose e Rafael
Guimarães dos Santos, publicado pela Editora Mercado de Letras
(*) com apoio da Fapesp.

O evento contou com a presença
do estimado e querido professor e amigo Mauro Almeida, entre tantos

Critique: Stars Over Half Moon Bay

On its face, Rod Humble's latest artgame, Stars Over Half Moon Bay, is a simple game about stargazing. This departs substantially from The Marriage,
which on its face was about nothing at all, save the motions and
transformations of geometric primitives. Of course, with that game, we
had the title to guide us.

In the case of Stars,
neither the title nor the sub-title ("the gentle bite of ouroboros")
helps us drill down past the surface interpretation. We must look to
the artist's background statement to learn that this is a work
concerning "the relationship between observation, symbolism, exactitude
and the creative process."

Casey Kaplan is pleased to
announce ‘The state itself becomes a super whatnot’, the fifth solo
exhibition at the gallery of artist, Liam Gillick. In a practice that
employs specific materials and multiple modes of production, Gillick
examines how the built world carries traces of social, economic, and
political systems.

Since 2004, Gillick has been presenting lectures, writings and artworks
that relate to a body of work titled “Construcción de Uno (Construction
of One)” – most notably as a central figure in the unitednationplaza
and nightschool projects in Berlin, Mexico City and the New Museum in
New York. Taking the form of a constantly reworked potential text, it
comprises a series of theoretical and fictional narratives that evolve
from Gillick’s research of past and present evaluations of the
aesthetics of social systems by focusing on modes of production rather
than consumption. The framework for the project derives from Brazilian
research into Scandinavian car production. In his notes, a group of
workers return to their abandoned workplace in order to rethink
eco-political exchange and to experiment with alternative production
methods.

‘The state itself becomes a super whatnot’, is descriptive of the next
twist in the narrative and designates the gallery space as a site for
the testing of rhetoric and potential exchange simultaneously. In the
exhibition, dual wall progressions, screens, and corrals relate to the
architectural structure of their surroundings and are potentially
regarded as a result of the communal, alternative production models
devised in the scenarios. Each work reflected in another, the Plexiglas
and painted aluminum structures produce competing color schemes:
monochromatic red, evoking many political and cultural symbolisms,
versus their multi-colored opponents. Twin wall texts that announce the
title and its reverse – ‘the whatnot itself becomes a super state’ –
mark the site of the exhibition as an extension of the complex
processes of democratic deferral and infinite sub-contracting that
underscore our current processes of exchange.

Gillick’s work engages with emergent consensus cultures, objects as
context, and time as material. It is within this theoretical framework
that Gillick’s exhibition produces a designated place for critical
interaction.

Liam Gillick is nominated for
the 2008 Vincent Award at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and will
create a major new body of work for the forthcoming Guggenheim
exhibition ‘theanyspacewhatever’ in October 2008. In January of 2008, the artist’s retrospective, ‘Three perspectives and a Short Scenario’,
opened at the Witte de With, Rotterdam and the Kunsthalle Zürich,
Zürich; it will continue to the Kunstverein München, München in
September 2008; and is scheduled to open at the Museum of Contemporary
Art Chicago, Chicago in October 2009.

this is a review of a 3 or 4 yr old group show that i had the honour to 'name', because it featured 3 of my former tutors at goldsmiths. one of them, angus fairhurst, died last week which is a friggin shame, to say the least

DRUNKENMASTERS

Whilst Sao Paulo Fashion Week hasn't started yet,
the local scene had the pleasure of hosting three influential names in
contemporary British art. Angus Fairhurst, Cerith Wyn Evans and Liam
Gillick integrate painting, collage, sculpture and installation. The
exhibition was named by young artist Tiago Carneiro da Cunha the three
artists were his tutors at Goldsmiths College in London. He borrowed
from the world of martial arts the term "Drunkenmasters," a reference
to a type of Kung Fu in which the fighter makes "drunken" movements in
order to confuse the adversary.

In spite of the decadence and glamour implied by the term, here it refers to the zigzag that these
artists have created in the trajectory of their careers, resorting to
practices external to the visual arts (music, literature, film) in
shaping the body of their work. More often seen in biennials than in
the scandalous group shows of New British Art, these three artists
produce high quality art with less sensationalism. Masters of the
intellectual thought behind the noise of their colleagues production,
they differ in a long history of influences and collaborations.

EVANS

Cerith Wyn Evans worked with the film director Derek Jarman and choreographer
Michael Clark, and participated in films and photos of Sam Taylor-Wood.
Gillick has an established reputation as a writer, developing critical
theories of various other artists, analyzing the ecosystems of art and
publishing fiction.

Has the Film Already Started? by Cerith Wyn Evans, is an enigmatic high-tech installation that paradoxically
suggests a solar eclipse in a placid and natural environment. The
abstract image of a white circle over a black background is projected
onto a suspended helium balloon, also white. A series of codes is in
play here. The projected image is from the film LAnti Concept, a
classic of avant-garde European cinema of the 1950s. Wyn Evans has
replaced the original sound track with his own composition, a kind of
50 minute sound diary that combines Art Blakey, the sound of birds, and
an interview with the Belgian artist Marcel Broodhathers, who in his
installations in the 1960s used the same palm trees that Wyn Evans
inserts into his installation.

Another work by this artist takes place outside the gallery. The verse "Aqui tudo parece que
ainda construo e j runa" ("Here everything seems still under
construction and already in ruins") from the song Fora da Ordem ("Out
of Order") by Caetano Veloso, will be written with fireworks. The
ephemeral event will become a film and also a wooden sculpture, where
the sentence will be legible even after being burned.

FAIRHURST

For years Fairhurst has collaborated intensely with Damien Hirst and Sarah
Lucas, most recently in the exhibition In-a-Gadda-da-Vidda (In the
Garden of Eden) in the Tate Britain. He also formed a rock band with
Wyn Evans years ago. In Five Billboards, body and text removed,
Fairhurst presents a collage the actual size of a billboard. By
removing determining elements of the original advertising imageshuman
figures and textsFairhurst opens new spaces on the plane, establishing
new relations between consumer culture, geometry, sex, beauty, and
painting. Fairhurst is also showing the sculpture Mnemonic Table, a
wooden table that retains the memory of nature. From the tables
interior, plants sprout.

GILLICK

Liam Gillick is exhibiting a wall painting, a geometric composition of intense colors.
Three sculptures of painted aluminum, suspended in the air, intertwine
words such as Communes, Greenrooms, and Bars, and superimpose
themselves on the painting. Gillicks work attempts to develop insight
into the way in which materials, structures, and color affect the
environment and create associations. These works function as
architectonic and ideological systems, forming scenarios that make vast
use of design to speak in an abstract manner of how forms and colors
can forge a social or political organization, or even an economic
reality.
